Rywka Bacha Mesynger (also known as Madame Feu Kutan) was born in Poland, in Szczebrzeszyn on March 9, 1919. Her father, a Jewish cobbler craftsman, ran a shoe shop.  During the international crisis of 1932, an uprising of workers, along with a general anti-Semite animosity and extremism forced him to close his store.  Rywka's parents sent her to Belgium to stay with her bother who also ran a shoe-shop.  She was 13 years old and did not know how to read or write French.  Rywka subsisted on text written in Yiddish by Polish authors which she obtained from the Place Agnessens Jewish library in Brussels.  Rywka lived clandestinely at the time because she did not have a “registration permit.”  However in 1936 she met her husband, Avram Kutan a haberdashery shop owner.  Avram and Rywka married in 1939 before the German invasion of May 1940.

In order to survive Rywka had to disguise herself by dying her hair blond, covering her face with outrageous make-up, and pretending to have a speech impediment.  At this time she worked for a politically connected Doctor and Nazi sympathizer as a maidservant and subjugated to serving meals to high-ranking German authorities.

Rywka found refuge in painting, her sole means of communicating with people around her.  Each of her works expresses this fundamental quality, deeply human, sometimes mystical or fatalistic characteristic through an ordinary subject.   There are four dominant themes in Rywka’s work, “The Past,”  “The suffering of the Jewish people,” “Women/Flowers/Animals” and “Tradition/Religion.”   Her art recalls the work of Modigliani, Soutine and Chagall, projecting the spirituality of the Jewish race, oneness with nature, mankind, and a reflection of a tragic life.

Rywka Bacha Mesynger passed away in 1980.
